An Introduction
First of all, thank you for visiting this page. This Foundation has been in the making for years, slowly gaining traction throughout my time University studying ancient history, but I can think of two key moments where it went from a nice idea, to something worth pursuing. The first, was when I read in a book on classical reception studies (the reference for which is, regrettably, lost under mountains of notes) a simple query: Who has more to gain from reading Virgil's Aeneid - the Western scholar having grown up in the relative peace of the 21st Century, or a refugee from afar, forced to leave their home and forced to try and settle in an alien place. Of course, value can be found in any text regardless of anyone's background, but the thought that the ancient past is often not examined and enjoyed by those who could engage so much with it, seems a desperate shame. The second factor was the push of ancient philosophy - "Don't explain your philosophy. Embody it." - Stoic philosopher Epictetus. I firmly believe in the mission of this foundation. Rather than simply holding its premise and goals in the mind, the Foxe Foundation is the next step, the embodiment of those beliefs. I hope that with your help this small charitable cause may grow and come to benefit curious students across England and the study of the Classical past as a whole.
